Grabengut Ice Sports Center, CH-Thun

The conversion of the Grabengut site into an ice sports center offers the opportunity to reorganize the building and land-use structures that have evolved over the years and are now disjointed. In a bold design move, all functions are encompassed under a large, new roof. Particularly noteworthy are, among other things, the skillfully applied Polonceau roof trusses, as well as the thoughtful integration and further development of the existing structures.

The ice rink’s wooden facade is designed as a multi-layered light filter that prevents direct sunlight from reaching the ice surface, yet does not appear closed off from either the inside or the outside. The wooden slats on the interior surface create a relief and act as a light-diffusing layer for the perforated skin. From the outside, a multifaceted interplay emerges between the dark shingles and the woven-in smoked glass panels.
