Erlenmatt East Building Lots 10+11, CH-Basel
The master plan for the entire Erlenmatt East area defines the two building structures of Building Blocks 10 and 11 in Construction Zone I as a “row of buildings forming the neighborhood character.” The west facade opens onto the new, spacious Erlenpark, while the courtyard facade faces the “BLG Silo,” which is used for events.

To meet this requirement, the basic concept is borrowed from existing silo construction: a simple structure with an efficient load-bearing framework and minimal facade detailing serves as a model and reference. Following the logic of simplicity, each building is equipped with only two stairwells and elevator shafts to provide access to the floors. However, to ensure that the large number of smaller apartments are accessible and that all apartments can face west, the larger apartments are organized as duplexes between the stairwells.

All duplex apartments feature a room with double-height ceilings, which not only provides the added benefit of two separate living areas but also enhances the sense of space in the kitchen and dining area. The interior connecting corridors between the circulation cores are located on only two floors and receive natural light through skylights.
