Bözingenfeld — West, CH-Biel

The new neighborhood, which is to be developed in Bözingenfeld-West on the eastern outskirts of Biel, is not intended to be seen as the boundary or endpoint of the city. Rather, it is a transitional area that extends the urban fabric and places it within the context of the surrounding landscape. In other words, it serves as a filter between the traditional settlement structure and the landscape. The goal is to create a low-rise, dense settlement structure comparable to that of downtown Biel.

An overarching structure defines which areas are enclosed and open, private and public. The goal is to prevent the creation of a loose collection of buildings that are not connected to one another. These organizing regulations, for example, specify a logical site layout with a clear path system and define fixed parameters such as the height of the buildings.

The building typologies may be chosen freely. To avoid uniformity and to give the neighborhood a distinctive character, a variety of building typologies is in fact expressly encouraged. Green spaces should not be viewed as leftover areas but should be integrated into the overall context.
